The Wayland High School varsity imgbaseball team lost the rubber game of a three-game series this week against O-K Gold Conference rival Grand Rapids Catholic Central by a 10-3 count.

The Wildcats, now 3-11 for the season overall, has split a doubleheader Wednesday versus the Cougars. The contest originally was scheduled for Thursday, but postponed to Friday because of inclement weather.

“Untimely errors in the top of the fifth inning proved to be the deciding factor in the game,” said coach Trenton Wilcox.

The game was tied at 3-3 heading into the fifth, when three Wildcat errors opened up the flood gates for the Cougars.

Taking the loss on the mound for Wayland Union was Jeff Betz, who went 4 2/3 innings allowing 9 runs, 5 of them earned, 6 hits, while striking out 4.

Pacing the offensive attack for Wayland were Betz, Sean Maddux and Matt Schaendorf. Betz was 1-for-3 with a single, a run scored, and was hit by a pitch. Maddux was also 1-for-3 with a single and hit by pitch. Schaendorf was 1-for-2 with a single, run scored and 2 walks.

The Wildcats are back in action Saturday at the Chippewa Hills Invitational. They will play Farwell at 11 a.m. and then the host Warriors at 1 p.m.
