The Veterans Memorial will be unveiled in an opening ceremony at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the southwest corner of North Park on 142nd Avenue.

The ceremony will include the national anthem and pledge of allegiance, remarks by Lyle Shanks, the adjutant/secretary for Dorr American Legion Post No. 127, and by special speakers, including representatives of the VanSingel family of Byron Center, which donated $30,000 toward the project. There also will be a flyover by the Hooligans Flight Team.

Activities will conclude at 2:50 p.m. with a 21-gun salute and the playing of “Taps.”

The memorial is 40 feet in diameter and will include a black granite monument surrounded by brick pavers and flagpoles with flags representing all five branches of the service: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard.
