A public e-waste recycling program will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, at the Gun Lake Tribe’s Government Campus – Public Works Parking Lot 2848 Mno Bmadzewen Drive. Shelbyville.

E-waste can often be refurbished or recycled and yet, it often ends up in a landfill. Old electronics often contain toxic substances such as lead, mercury, cadmium and chromium. These toxins are then leaked into soil and groundwater when disposed of in landfills. They may also contain other heavy metals and potentially toxic chemical flame retardants.

The Gun Lake Tribe’s Environmental Department works with Valley City Electronic Recycling to dispose of unwanted and old electronics. Valley City Electronic Recycling does not ship e-waste overseas and has a zero-landfill policy that requires that all recycled e-waste is recycled, refurbished or reused.

Acceptable items include office and household electronics, cell phones, radios, microwaves, VCRs and TVs, computer laptops, monitors, keyboards and mice, printers, speakers and pow er cords. All computer hard drives are erased or destroyed by Valley City Electronic Recycling.

For more information, call Shawn McKenney at (269) 397-1780.

Another electronic recycling event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 4, at the Harding’s Market parking lot in Wayland (see advertisement).
