Wayland Union Schools will have a ground breaking ceremony for the new middle school wing at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, at the east end of the middle school near the construction site.
Excavation will begin soon and is estimated to be completed before school begins in the fall of 2019. During the 2018-19 school year the interior construction will be safely sealed off from students. Once completed, the school will house sixth through eighth grades.
The additional wing will be added to the east side of the building and will include ten new classrooms, two science rooms, and two large group instructional areas for S.T.E.A.M. (Science Technology Engineering Arts and Math) and orchestra.
Safety features include a new, main secure entrance at the west end of the building and a new secure student entrance will be built in the new wing.
The parent drop off area will be moved to the west side of the building with a new bus drop off site at the south side of the building. The project also includes replacing the chiller and boiler, as well as other building enhancements.
Wayland Union Schools began accepting bids for the new wing this month. The estimated cost of the new wing is $12,032,127 and is part of the $19.25 million bond passed by voters in November 2017.
