Wayland Middle School eighth-grader Evie Mathis, daughter of Rick and Cindy Mathis, last weekend matched her best performance in the pole vault by clearing 10 feet, 6 inches at a special field events meet last weekend at Dexter, Mich. Mathis hasn’t entered high school yet, but has bettered the school record in the event by three inches and she was ranked second in the nation last year. She also competes in basketball, volleyball and swimming.
