Ex-Wildcat coach Jerry Diorio enjoying unbeaten season thus far

diorio-and-ulezacFormer Wayland High School head football coach Jerry Diorio (left) and former Western Michigan University coach Elliott Uzelac have combined efforts to turn around the football program at Benton Harbor High School, a school that has not had much success in the sport for a long time. With Diorio as assistant coach and Uzelac as head coach, the Tigers made the post-season playoffs a year ago and currently are 7-0 after a 43-0 pasting of Charlotte Friday evening. They also have claimed South Christian as one of their victims earlier this season. Benton Harbor already has qualified for the Division 4 post-season playoffs and was ranked No. 6 in last week’s Associated Press state-wide poll.

Coach Elliott Uzelac has an unbeaten season so far. Diorio is along for the ride.

Well said… when the head coach makes the right decisions at the right time, all the other coaches look good. Elliot Uzelac is a fine coach, this is just something to do in his “retirement years”. Kind of like a rising phoenix from ashes. Good, talented athletes, just no direction before Elliot took over. I hope they are also good students. Mr. Uzelac will stress that to keep them eligible.
