Amber Collige, the driver of a fast food delivery vehicle that struck and killed a 5-year-old boy last July was sentenced in Allegan County Circuit Court to 11 months in jail but will avoid prison.

Collige, who was making a delivery in a Jimmy John’s SUV, had THC in her system, authorities determined, when hitting 5-year-old Blake Huffman in the Windsor Woods mobile home park. Huffman was riding his 7-year-old sister’s bicycle.

Authories said Collige, 33, admitted she smoked “half a bowl” of marijuana that morning before the crash. They said she had finished a delivery, drove around a parked vehicle and was returning to her driving lane when she hit the boy, who died at the scene.

Collige told officers she thought she was driving at the speed limit of 15 mph, but couldn’t stop in time to avoid the crash. Detectives estimated she was traveling 27 to 32 mph and their tests revealed the SUV’s rear wheels “were not operating effectively.”

Colligue pleaded no contest in February to attempted operating under the influence causing death. Authorities agreed to drop a charge of operating under the influence causing death.

She was also sentenced to 60 months of probation.
