Fire destroys abandoned house in Dorr Township

An abandoned empty house in the 1200 block of 142nd Avenue in Dorr Township burned to the ground Friday morning.

The Dorr, Wayland and Leighton Township fire departments were summoned to the scene at a little past 2 a.m. and found it was too late to save the aging and frail structure. Firefighters said they spent all their time to keep the fire from spreading to brush and other structures nearby.

It was reported that the building has been abandoned and empty for the last 20 years and the power had been shut down a long time ago. Crews were advised  to keep their distance because the home was tall and frail and could give way at any time.

No injuries were reported but EMS was on standby for firefighters’ wellness checks.

Firefighters also found a live power line down in the woods, near the fire. They taped it off and and alerted the power company to deal with it later.
