When Davenport University launches its first football season next fall, it appears that at least two local athletes will be on its roster.
The school announced this week that Wayland High School senior quarterback Tanner VanDyk was among the 32 recruits it has signed. Van Dyke, who will graduate this spring, will join former Hopkins High School standout Wyatt Stegeman, who took part in the school’s fall workouts under coach Lou Esposito.
Davenport is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), but next year will join the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Association with such schools as Grand Valley, Ferris and Northwood.
Tanner VanDyk, who is listed at 6-foot-2 and 190 pounds, was named all-conference after last season, piling up 2,047 passing yards for 10 touchdowns. He threw for 373 yards against Hopkins in the season opener last August.
Stegeman, listed as 5-9 and 184 pounds, was a starter for the playoff Hopkins grid teams in the fall of 2013 and 2014, playing running back and linebacker.
