Fleeing incident suspect captured in Wayland Twp.

The man sought by Allegan County Sheriff’s authorities for fleeing and eluding in Plainwell was captured in Wayland Township Wednesday night.

Allegan County Central Dispatch received several tips of a black male matching the description of the suspect near 16th Street and Baseline Road. Plainwell Department of Public Safety, Otsego Police Department and Allegan County Sheriff’s deputies were summoned to the area. As officers drove by an address on AB Ave near Ravine Road, the man took some keys from the home and entered a vehicle in the driveway. The subject fled the scene while the owner of the vehicle was trying to get him to stop, causing the victim to be ejected from the vehicle.

The pursuit began on northbound U.S.-131. Allegan County deputies joined and were able to deploy “Stop Sticks,” causing the passenger tire to deflate.  The subject pulled over to the shoulder of US 131 and was placed into custody in Wayland Township.

The names of the victims and suspects are not being release pending further investigation.  The victim ejected from the vehicle received minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Earlier in the week, a deputy stopped a vehicle southbound on US 131 at the 49 mile marker for speeding and found evidence of drug use and began to further investigate. The deputy was assisted by a public safety officer from the Plainwell Department of Public Safety so that the subjects could be removed from the vehicle and a search conducted.

During this investigation one of the subjects became uncooperative and jumped over to the driver seat and attempted to flee. The deputy and the Plainwell officer were attempting to apprehend him as he began to drive off.  The deputy and the officer were partially in the vehicle as it pulled away and both received minor injuries.

Local authorities are expressing gratitude for the public being diligent and calling in the tips to lead to the apprehension of the subject.
