Lady Wildcat bowl teamThe Wayland girls’ varsity bowling team remained undefeated in match play this season Wednesday afternoon with a 27-3 victory over Wyoming at Airport Lanes. The boys’ team was almost as impressive in a 23-7 triumph.

The Lady Wildcats’ experience and depth led to them winning going away.  They came out of the starting gate on all cylinders down the Wolves in the first Baker game with a new school record score, 214-158.

They continued on their roll with a win in the second Baker game 178-159, making their two-game Baker series of 392 also a new school record as they jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead in the overall scoring.

They continued their strong bowling in the first individual game taking all nine points, winning 796-580.

Leading the way for the first game was sophomore Sydney Urben with a 190, senior Lizzy Cobb 177 and junior Alicia Sweeney 161.

Up 19-0 entering the last game, the Lady Wildcats defeated the Wolves 693-626 and taking eight of the last 11 points. Pacing the team the second game was Urben with a 226 and she finished the day with a remarkable two-game set of 416..

In individual matchups, Wayland claimed the next 17 out of 20 points. High games were turned in by Michael Foley, 201 and 198; Austen Beggs, 212 and 201, and Cameron Heintzelman 210 and 264.

Boys’ team coach Sherry Miklusicak said her team narrowly missed a new school record for a two-game series by just three pins

Girls’ coach Bill Holbrook noted that freshman Amber Beggs saw her first varsity action of the year.

“This was a solid start to a very busy four days of bowling with girls getting time on the lanes tonight,” Holbrook commented. “With our first conference match tomorrow (home vs Thornapple-Kellogg) and then back-to-back tournaments Friday and Saturday, this was the start we needed. Being able to bowl eight tonight will help us later in the week.”

So the Lady Wildcats will open O-K Gold Conference play Thursday afternoon at Airport Lanes against Middleville Thornapple Kellogg.
