Former Leighton, Dorr deputy promoted to patrol lieutenant

Sgt. Brandon Berens has been promoted to patrol lieutenant at the Allegan County Sheriff’s Department.

Berens, who formerly served as a deputy in the Leighton and Dorr Township areas, near the end of 2024 after the promotion of Capt. John Paul Damveld.

Lt. Berens, a 2011 graduate of Grand Valley State University, has been assigned to many positions at the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office since being hired in 2012. He began in general road patrol; and then was assigned to the Sheriff’s Office traffic enforcement team, until he was assigned to Dorr and Leighton Townships.

He was promoted to road patrol sergeant in 2020, until his promotion to lieutenant.

He’s held many specialty assignments as well – SWAT team leader, honor guard, evidence tech, field training officer, field training supervisor, training administrator, defensive tactics instructor, and taser instructor.

As patrol lieutenant, Berens oversees the road patrol sergeants and deputies who patrol Allegan County.
