Jay DeJongh, proprietor of the DeJongh Grocery Store in Dorr until his retirement in 1987, died Sunday, Oct. 11, after 95 years of well-lived life.
In his retirement, he enjoyed meat cutting at the Byron Locker. Jay was a member of Dorr Christian Reformed Church and served terms as elder and deacon and regularly counted the offering. In recent years he attended Maranatha Christian Reformed Church, Holland.
Jay proudly served active duty in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was among the original volunteer firefighters for Dorr Township. Over the years Jay played softball, waterskied and bowled. He still played a couple rounds of golf three months before his death.
He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Joanne (Heetderks) DeJongh, daughter Vicki and Jeff Meyer, son Terry and Alice DeJongh, grandchildren Grant and Sarah DeJongh, and Garrett DeJongh, brother Neal and Linda DeJongh, and siblings in-law Roger Bremer, and Gerald and Florence Meyers.
No visitation or service is planned. Memorial contributions may be made to West Michigan Veterans Assistance Program (wmvap.org).
