Former school board member Marilyn Bastian dies

Marilyn E. Bastian, age 91 of Dorr, died Tuesday, Dec. 29.

Marilyn received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from Western Michigan University. She taught school for 30 years, retiring from Kelloggsville Public Schools in 1985. Most of her teaching career – 21 years – was spent in the area of special education.

Community service was a big part of Marilyn’s life. She was active in the Dorr Township Library, and the board, with several years as its president; she was on the Wayland Union School Board for 12 years, served as its treasurer and was on the advisory committee.

She was active in the Allegan County School Board Association, serving for several years as its president. She and Frank were inducted into the Wayland Union Alumni Hall of Fame and received an award for the Dorr Township citizen of the year

She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Frank; their daughter, Mary; son, Paul Bastian; granddaughter, Rachel Taylor; two great-grandchildren Charlie and Bastian; sister-in-law, Marge Stigers; two nieces, one nephew and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents Clarence and Sylvia “Betty” Stigers and brother C. Jim Stigers

Memorial contributions in Marilyn’s honor may be made to a local charity of one’s choice.
