Ex-Wayland officer wins sheriff dept. promotion

The Allegan County Sheriff’s office has announced the promotion of Lt. John Paul Damveld to operations captain.

He was promoted near the end of 2024 after the retirement of Capt. Brett Ensfield. 

Capt. Damveld joined the Allegan County Sheriff’s office in 2006, and was assigned to the townships of Dorr/Leighton; after two years of being a patrolman for Wayland City Police Department.

Damveld worked with the multi-jurisdictional narcotics team in 2012 West Michigan Enforcement Team (WEMET), as a detective. After his time in WEMET, he was assigned to the traffic team.

He was promoted to road patrol sergeant and supervised the traffic enforcement team. He’s been an active member of SWAT, honor guard, and the crash reconstruction team. He was assigned to the post of administrative sergeant and shortly after became the road patrol lieutenant.

Damveld Last year was promoted to operations captain, overseeing road patrol, the detective bureau, and corrections.
