Wayland Union Schools were host for the Region 4 Odyssey of the Mind Tournament last weekend. Wayland had a record 11 teams in the regional tournament to compete with schools from across West Michigan.

Four teams are headed to the state competition on Saturday, March 16, at Thornapple Kellogg Middle and High School.

Some of the highlights:

• The Middle School team, coached by Erin Smith and Chris Shafer, placed second on Problem 1, Division 2 and will be advancing to the state competition.
• The Dorr Elementary team, coached by Stephanie VanLonkhuyzen, placed first in Problem 2, Division 1 and will be advancing to the state competition.
• The Middle School team, coached by Dawn Stein, placed third in Problem 3, Division 2.
• The Pine Street team, coached by Laura Foster, placed fourth in Problem 3, Division 2.
• The Steeby team, coached by Rachel McGrady-Hawley, placed second in Problem 4, Division 1 and will be advancing to the state competition.

Though all of Primary teams were reported to have done an outstanding job, they don’t award “places” in the primary competition or advance to state.
