Both Hopkins hoops squads on losing skids
Both the Hopkins boys’ and girls’ basketball teams have hit a bad patch as the holiday break approaches.
The Lady Vikings Friday night lost 43-37 to Muskegon Mona Shores, absorbing their fifth straight defeat since their season opening victory over Three Rivers.
Meanwhile, the guys Thursday night fell 45-29 to Wyoming Godfrey Lee, in their sixth straight loss since beating Buchanan in their season opener.
Wayland boys also are absorbing losses consecutively, dropping their third straight Friday night, 94-56, at the hands of Holland Christian. The Wildcats won their first three, then lost three in a row.
Martin boys’ losing streak reaches 4
The Martin boys’ basketball team has joined the streaking woes of area teams, dropping its fourth straight, 58-28 to Galesburg-Augusta. The Clippers take a 2-4 record into the holiday break.
The Martin girls’ team lost a 44-39 heartbreaker to Galesburg-Augusta in overtime. This, after a herioc buzzer beating basket by Avery Jager to send the contest into the extra session. So the Lady Clippers fell to 2-4.
“We felt like we had all the momentum over heading into overtime after a tremendous effort of getting back in the game after a slow start,” said coach Ben Schipper. “Timely, unforced turnovers and fouls in key situations sent GA to the line multiple times, allowing them to extend a lead.
“We’re extremely proud of the fight the girls showed. As this was our third game out of six so far that has been a one possession game in the final seconds, all three resulting in losses, we’re hoping we can learn from these experiences and be battle tested coming back from Christmas break.
“It stings knowing we’re one possession away per game from being 5-1, but we it serves as motivation that we need to clean some things up. We can’t keep turning over the ball at this rate and allowing teams to get to the free throw line so much. Conversely, we need to make our free throws as they have been the difference in our three close losses.”
Seniors Avery Jager and Macy Thorne led Martin in scoring with 14 points each.
