All area residents who received meat from the monthly food distribution Friday at the United Church of Wayland should discard it

Officials from Feeding America of West Michigan say they have received complaints that the meat is tainted and it is best to err on the side of caution, so they recommend it be thrown away to avoid any potential health problems.

The last distribution of free food for the needy was conducted Friday, Sept. 21, at the United Church of Wayland parking lot at 411 E. Superior St. The monthly distribution, sponsored by Wayland Area Ministries, is provided to help families who struggle with meeting nutrition needs. Officials claim the distributions provide enough food to feed roughly 100 families for three to four days. The types of food available are fresh fruits and vegetables, milk, yogurt and other dairy products, breads and other baked goods.

Wayland Area Ministries is a joint effort of a group of religious and charitable organizations in the local community — St. Therese of Lisieux Roman Catholic Church, United Church of Wayland, the Bill Howe family, Sts. Cyril & Methodius and the Gun Lake Community Church .

The food is provided by Feeding America of West Michigan.
