A 20-vehicle pileup near the D Avenue exit (No. 44) on southbound U.S.-131 closed a stretch of the freeway south of Wayland for much of Friday.

Kalamazoo County deputies said several injuries have been reported and the wait for reopening was expected to lengthy. Southbound traffic on the expressway was being routed onto D Avenue

The lane closures reached as far north as the northbound lanes of U.S.-131 at 20 Mile Road in Osceola Township.

Lake-effect snow slammed West Michigan Thursday night, Friday and Saturday, leading to challenging driving conditions. The National Weather Service said snow is expected to continue through Sunday morning, particularly near U.S. 131 and to the west.

The snowstorm also was blamed for a multiple vehicle crash near the Dorr exit at 142nd Avenue (No. 68), but that scene has been cleared.
