Funeral arrangements pending for Phyllis Stein

Phyllis Stein, matriarch of one of the most well-known and respected families in Wayland and Hopkins, died Saturday night.

Word was spread Sunday morning at the St. Therese Parish, where she and her family have been members for many years.

The Steins formerly lived in Hopkins and moved to Wayland, where her husband, Burrell, was mayor for several years and owner-operator of Wayland Carpet & Linoleum and manager of the Wayland branch of United Bank.

Phyllis raised their five daughters and four sons. Burrell added that Phyllis raised their nine children and her one husband.

The Steins lived in New Salem and in 1984 moved to Wayland and became active members in the community and at St. Therese Catholic Church. They said they fell in love with Wayland which led Burrell to run for mayor and he served in that position from 2004 until 2008.

The Steins were selected as grand marshals of the 2017 Wayland Chamber of Commerce Christmas parade.

Arrangements are being made by the family and Kubiak-Cook Funeral Home.

They moved from New Salem, not Hopkins. They lived near the St. Mary’s Visitation Parish of which they were members. Beloved by all.
