Funeral is Saturday for Al Kornoelje, 69, of Shelbyville

Albert “Al” Michael Kornoelje, age 69 of Shelbyville, died Saturday, July 24,

Al graduated from Rogers High School in Wyoming. He loved driving and drove anything with a steering wheel – trucks, heavy equipment, boats, motorcycles and his 1963 Corvette. He drove truck for General Asphalt for 29 years and Rhino Seeds for five years.

He greatly enjoyed car shows, racing, kayaking, golfing, and spending time with family, friends, and neighbors. He loved to travel with his wife and every winter they set off to explore.

He and wife Karen attended Martin United Methodist Church.

Al was a wonderful son, fun-loving brother, amazing husband, terrific uncle, great friend and neighbor. He always let his playful, goofy, caring personality shine.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Karen (nee Schmidt) Kornoelje; sisters-in-law Roberta (Fred) Palmer, Nancy (Tom) Scobey, Linda Schmidt, Joyce Ward; brothers-in-law David (Sandy) Schmidt, Richard (Sandy) Schmidt; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Regina DeWitt; father, Albert William Kornoelje; brother, Bill Kornoelje; mother-in-law, Joyce (nee Deur) Schmidt; father-in-law, Melbourne Schmidt; brothers-in-law Steven Schmidt, Ronald Schmidt, and William Rabideau.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 30, at Kubiak-Cook Funeral Home – Wayland Chapel, 312 N. Main St., Wayland, MI 49348. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 31, at Kubiak-Cook Funeral Home.

In memory of Al and in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
