Popular Wayland barber Joseph Henry “Joe” Booker Sr. died Sunday, June 19, in Naples, Fla., after a brief battle with cancer.
Joe was the owner of The Kings Room and co-founder of Booker Institute of Cosmetology. Those who knew him will remember his energy, quick wit, and unique ability to recall names and faces.
Booker operated his barber shop on East Superior Street, next door to the Helmey Building, during the late 1960s and early to mid-1970s. He was the first local barber to begin styling men’s longer hair, thereby adapting to changing conditions in the business.
Joe is survived by his children: Joseph Jr. Booker (Zach, Angie, and Henry), Michele Sisson (Waverly), and Tyler Booker (Gabrielle, Mattea); by his great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends. He is also survived by his siblings: Sherry Skridulis (Tom), Ed (Sue), and Paul.
Joe was preceded in death by his father and mother, Henry and Susie Booker.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 27, at the First Reformed Church of Grandville, 3060 Wilson Ave SW. Visitation will be held at the church from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, June 26,
