Funeral mass for August Steffes Jr. of North Dorr set

August Joseph Steffes Jr., age 91 of North Dorr, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, in the comfort of his home.

Jr. proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He was known for his love of music, playing guitar with local family and friends; they went by the name of Jr. Steffes and the Milk House Band.

He was very competitive and enjoyed his rec leagues, bowling, softball, horseshoes, golf, and pool. He was a tool and die maker by day, a farmer by night, and cake deliveryman on the weekends. Jr. took up woodworking in his retirement and his family and friends treasure the fruits of his labors. He was an amazing father, grandfather, and great-grandfather; he loved family gatherings where you could experience the love and laughter of everyone.

He is survived by children Bernie and Joyce Steffes, Margie Steffes and Bert Jones, Terry and Dorothy Steffes, Mark and Michelle Steffes, Tim and Stacey Steffes, Mike and Barb Steffes, Julie and Dan Ball; grandchildren Mandi and John Nielson, Tricia and Jacob Burmeister, James and Shelly Jager, Ben Steffes, Stacy and Anthony Culver, Andrew and Jessica Steffes, Carolyn Steffes and Niall Tatton, Elizabeth Steffes and Carson Krueger, Kurt and Jessica Steffes, Alex Steffes, Tyler Ball, Chad Steffes, Jay Steffes, Sarah Ball, Adam Ball, Andrea Steffes, and Kate Steffes; great-grandchildren Ava Steffes, Beth, Molly, Zachary and Theo Nielson, Olivia Jager, Myles and AnnaBelle Culver, and Mason Steffes. Also surviving are sisters Doris Zerfas, Donna and Jerry Schumaker; brother-in-law, Butch Simons; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents August and Helen Steffes; wife, Mary Steffes; and brother, Delmer Steffes.

Funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, with one hour of visitation prior, at St. Mary’s Visitation Church, 2459 146th St. in Byron Center. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8, at Cook Funeral Home, 2067 84th St. SW, Byron Center. Rosary will be held at 2 p.m. Friday.

In honor of Jr., contributions may be made to Restoring our Heritage Capital Campaign (St. Mary’s Visitation Church Restoration) or Emmanuel Hospice.
