Sharilynn Bernice Westfahl of Wayland died Tuesday, Dec. 21, at Allegan General Hospital.
Sharilynn was raised on her family farm in Hilliards and attended school at St. Stanislaus Catholic School and then graduated from Hopkins High School in 1966. She spent 30 years working for Wayland Union Schools as a bus driver.
Sharilynn had an outgoing personality and was well-known by many in the community. As her students knew, she always carried red lipstick with her and “promised” the naughty kids she would give them a kiss on the cheek so that their parents would know they had been misbehaving on the bus that day.
She worked very hard to provide for her family as a single mother. She was loyal, smart, hardworking, stubborn as a bull, and everything an independent woman should be.
She is survived by her daughter, Malissa Westfahl; grandchildren Michael W., Zachary, Devin, Zhanae Westfahl; great-granddaughter, Marzia; and one great-granddaughter on the way.
She was preceded in death by her parents William Jr. and Marilynn Westfahl-Collier; brother, David Westfahl; son, Michael B. Westfahl; and granddaughter, Mykhayla Westfahl.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, at Kubiak-Cook Funeral Home Dorr Chapel (4330 18th St.). Funeral mass will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, at St. Therese Catholic Church (128 Cedar St., Wayland. She will be laid to rest at Elmwood Cemetery in Wayland.
In memory of Sharilynn and in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a hospice foundation of one’s choice.
