German native Reinhard Petermeier dies at age 61

Reinhard Franz-Georg Petermeier, age 61 of Moline, died Thursday, April 11.

He came to the U.S. from Germany in 1984 and worked as a journeyman tool and die maker for 38 years before retiring in 2022. Since then he enjoyed traveling the U.S. with his wife in their motor home, achieving their goal of visiting the 48 contiguous states in 2023. He also enjoyed making woodchips in his barn while practicing his woodworking.

He died at his cottage which was his “happy place.”

Reinhard is survived by his wife of 38 years, Laurie (Van Roekel) Petermeier; children Amanda Petermeier and Josef Petermeier; sister, Gaby Sygulla; brother, Bernhard (Michaele) Petermeier; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Darlene Barrett, Jerry (Heather) Van Roekel, Kathy (William) King; many nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Josef and Hildegard Petermeier; parents-in-law William and Elbertha Van Roekel; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Ronald and Miles Van Roekel, Gregory Barrett and William J. Van Roekel.

A celebration of Reinhard’s life will commence at 11 a.m. Friday, April 19, with visitation one hour prior, at Cook Funeral Home, 4330 18th Street, Dorr. Pastor Bud Pratt will be officiating.
