Good to see new bragging sign, but it needs tweaking

ACHTUNG: This is not a fair and balanced story. It is an editorial by the editor.

Local crews were busy this past week installing new signs with bragging rights, welcoming motorists to the city.

The reason for the newest sign was that the Wayland High School softball team won the Division 2 state championship in 2015, so an update in information was necessary. Another reason was that the old sign was beginning to show signs of aging and had gaps in lettering.

But there remains one problem.

The old sign said Wayland is the hometown of two state runners-up in debate and forensics during the mid-1990s. It has been removed permanently, which is a good idea because runners-up generally aren’t the subject of these bragging signs. In fact, Hopkins has no such sign for being runners-up twice in football and once in girls’ basketball.

But the new sign, while including the state softball championships of 206 and 2015, omits the 2003-04 state championship Wayland High School won in debate and forensics, the first state title the school ever earned.

It was good to see the updated sign, but isn’t there a way to have the sign acknowledging the debate and forensics title as well? It would thereby give equal notice to academic and athletic excellence.

Is it possible the sign for the forensics and debate championship can be re-installed without a lot of cost?
