A high speed chase that started in Kent County ended this morning on Standish Drive in Wayland with the capture of a male teen.
Authorities and witnesses said a young man, accompanied by young woman, stole a car in Grand Rapids and hightailed it to Wayland, attracting a large number of police vehicles in pursuit. Local residents said the thieves’ car eventually was spiked by tires.
The girl surrendered on Church Street and K-9 officers helped to apprehend the male suspect who fled on foot afterward. Witnesses said the suspect was hurdling fences before finally being subdued.
Mayor Pro Tem Joe Kramer posted on Facebook, “He ran across our deck just before 6 a.m. with a police K-9 following shortly thereafter.”
Local businesswoman Nissa Smith observed, “They caught him in my neighbors yard!! He’s not so great at hopping fences.”
Local authorities added that Wayland Union Schools buildings in town all were locked down this morning.
