WHS soccerThe Wayland boys’ varsity soccer team opened up O-K Gold Conference play Monday evening by losing 6-1 to one of the league’s new schools, Grand Rapids Christian.

Coach Ben Sleeman said the game got off to a rough start, seeing the Eagles score on their first two shots to take an early 2-0 lead.

“However, Tristen Ortiz played a nice through ball to Chuck Wroblewski who was able to beat the keeper and bring the home team back within striking distance. Unfortunately, a late goal by the visitors made the halftime score 3-1.”

The second half saw the Wildcats battle for 40 more minutes but they allowed three more goals.

Jake Larsen made 8 saves in the loss.

The Wildcat boys, now 0-4, will be back in action on Wednesday when they play host to local rivals Thornapple Kellogg Middleville for their second conference matchup of the season.
