The General RV dealership and service center continues to grow so much that it plans to expand at its current site on Reno Drive in Wayland.
The business, headquartered in Wixom and which opened its doors here in 2004, now plans to expand its building by 44 percent, and the Wayland City Planning Commission unanimously approved site plans with minor conditions Tuesday evening.
Craig Zokas of Schonsheck, Inc., representing the dealership, told the Planning Commission expansion would accommodate a growth in work force from 86 to 100 and increase the size of the parking lot.
“Their parking lot is full and that’s why they need to expand,” Zokas said.
He added that general RV will have sold about 1,200 recreational vehicles in Wayland this year by late December.
The conditions included increasing the number of handicap parking spaces from five to six, lighting that is downward shielding, a 10-foot high enclosure for the trash compactor and a brick building façade except for the west side, which will have sheet metal grading.
City Manager Mike Selden pointed out that General RV is not changing anything that had been approved back in 2004 when it first came to town.
“It’s just adding more services and parking, but it’s not changing the land use,” he said.
Planning Commission Chairman John Frigmanski said, “We know it agrees with our master plan and meets our height and setback requirements.”
General RV agreed to add to the “green” buffer by planting grasses and locust trees.
