Leighton Township continues to grow, particularly in residential units, and the Township Board Thursday night gave final approval to an eight-unit condo site off 144th Avenue.
Developer Ron Van Singel of the Merestone Group of Byron Center outlined the Summit Pointe Condos site of 20 acres before final play approval was granted. The Planning Commission earlier this month gave its blessing.
“We went through due diligence,” Van Singel told the board, noting two water well sites have been approved by the Allegan County Health Department and a residential association has been established.
The development will have a private road, Summit Pointe Drive.
Jack Weaver is the owner.
However, Leighton Thursday also approved dropping a residential site when it approved the Haveman rezoning request from R-1 to commercial, or general business.
“They’ve been running a business at the site,” Trustee John Hooker reported.
The business is located next to Sipkema Drain and Tile on 12th Street just off 142nd Avenue.
“So we have a little commercial corridor going on here,” quipped Treasurer Char Troost.
Haveman’s is a fork lift truck repair business.
Supervisor Steve Deer said Leighton Township this year through October has accepted 57 building permits for a total value of about $10.7 million. All 57 were for residential units.
