Gun Lake citizens stage protest of marina expansion

by Austin Marsman

Nearly 15 citizens held a peaceful demonstration this weekend against Lucas Spoor’s plans to expand his marina on Gun Lake.

Many of those marching had passionate arguments against the marina expansion, and inist it means they will lose their rightful dock access to the lake. The proposed expansion of the Landing Marina on Gun Lake includes three access docks, with the largest one measuring 265 feet long and 6 feet wide. Spoor also wants a 22-foot-long concrete boat ramp to be installed.

Protestors carried signs reading “Save the Shore” and “No Spoor on South Shore” as they walked down Marsh Road. Outspoken resident Terry Barton brought up numerous issues ranging from allegations of discrimination to asbestos dust coating his home after related construction.

Brianne Fair, one of the locals heading the effort, said the actions already taken by Spoor have been “less-than-neighborly.” Commenting on the protest, Fair said, “Our community is amazing, we come together.”

Those opposed to the proposal had a chance to voice concerns at a May 31 Department of Environmental Quality DEQ hearing at the Orangeville Township Hall. Almost 300 concerned citizens were in attendance.

The Sam’s Landing Association has used the property since the 1930s. They have made a public group on Facebook called ‘Neighbors and Friends Against the Landing Marina’ to share documents and concerns about the marina. Spoor has not yet responded to requests for comment on Saturday’s protests, despite attempts to contact him.

During the demonstration, there was a nearby accident on the lake. Fair clarified, to avoid any misunderstanding, that those participating in the protest did not know about the incident. She added that her heart goes out to the family and those involved.
