Both Hopkins and Wayland were involved in football contests that ended with identical 35-0 final scores. Hopkins was on the winning side. Waylamd found itself on the wrong side.

The Vikings moved to 3-1 overall with their shutout victory in their homecoming.

Meanwhile, Martin hiked its season record to 4-0 with a 58-0 shellacking of Eau Claire. It was the Clippers’ second shutout of the season and they have outscored their opponents by a combined count of 202 to 58 over four games.

Zach Wierenga rushed for 173 yards and Hopkins as a team ate up 310 Yards in total offense.

Wierenga scored on an eight-yard run in the opening quarter and Caden Brown scored from four yards out in the second period, as Hopkins took a 14-0 lead into the halftime break.

Wierenga raced 99 yards to the end zone  in the third period and added a two-yard TD run in the same period. Christian Smiegel tossed a 17-yard scoring strike in the third quarter to Aiden Schwartz to close out the scoring for the evening, as neither team scored in the final quarter.

Owen Reed nailed all five of his extra point attempts.

The Wayland varsity football team had its overall season record evened at 2-2 Friday night by a stingy Hamilton defense in its shutout loss.

The Wildcats this season hadn’t scored fewer than 20 points, but Hamilton found ways to stifle their offensive efforts at every turn.

Hamilton, which blew out two opponents earlier this year and lost by a single point, used a mixture of passing and running to score their five touchdowns and kicker Gabe Schrotenboer booted all five extra points successfully.

Wayland did have a few fine defensive plays, such as Brighton Merren’s quarterback sack, dropping a pass catcher behind the line of scrimmage, and a pass disruption by D.J. Keur.

The Wildcats picked up a few first downs in their drives, but that was about it.

Wayland will be at home next Friday night for a homecoming contest against Spring Lake.

The Clippers perform their customary rendition of the school fight song at the conclusion of victory.

Hopkins’s kicker is Owen Reed. Not Reed Owen.
