Bowens Mills “It’s Cider Time” festivals are shutting down after nearly a half century just east of Wayland.

“We are sad to announce that we can no longer have ‘It’s Cider Time’ festivals at Historic Bowen Mills,” said co-owners Carleen and Owen Sabin. “Unfortunately the State of Michigan has decided that our cider making days have come to an end.”

State health department officials have cited the historic attraction for selling cider that was not properly or adequately pasteurized.

Carleen Sabin is the daughter of former owners Neal and Marion Cook at the location in Yankee Springs Township.

“We have been celebrating the fall season at Bowens Mills for over 40 years and we have very much enjoyed sharing that with all of you,” the joint statement continued. “Thank you so much for all of your support in helping us to continue to preserve the history of days gone by at Bowens Mills through the years.

“We would also like to thank the many people that have volunteered their time and been so faithful at supporting us and making our events successful.Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers as we make this difficult adjustment.”
