Wayland boys’ varsity basketball coach Mike Hudson next month will do something he was unable to do until June 17 — coach his daughter in a game.
Hudson is listed as an assistant coach for the Champions of Character high school girls’ all-star game, along with Wildcat girls’ head coach Marty Howard and Catholic Central coach Travis Hinshaw. The top 22 senior girls in West Michigan, selected by the Champions of Character Committee, will be in action at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, at the Cornerstone University fieldhouse.
The boys’ all-star game will get under way at 7 p.m. that evening.
Besides two coaches, Wayland will have four players take part in the competition, Lacey James and Dilon Aten for the guys and Presley Hudson and Caroline (C.J.) Miller for the girls.
Mike Hudson, who has been Wayland’s boys’ varsity coach for more than 20 years, took a year off during Presley’s freshman year to watch her play, but returned to the sidelines the following season. He has never actually coached her in a game until June 17, but he coached son Wes, a Cornerstone University standout, for four years and has guided son Avery over the past two seasons.
Presley Hudson, an all-state performer and runner-up in the balloting for Miss Basketball in Michigan, will play next year at Central Michigan University. C.J. Miller will attend Baker College.
Lacey James will play at Division I Rider College in New Jersey next year. Aten will play for Cornerstone.
Aten and James were the top two scorers for the Wildcats’ team that went 19-4 overall for the season, losing in the tournament to eventual state champion Godwin.
Hudson and Miller were the top two scorers for the Lady Wildcats, who went 23-2, finally bowing in the regionals to state runner-up Haslett.
Admission is $5 for per person. Family passes are available for $15. Proceeds will be donated to the Champions of Character Lecture Initiative.
