The Hopkins junior varsity and varsity football games against Kelloggsville this week have been canceled.
Hopkins school officials said JV game tonight and varsity game Friday night were called off “due to unforeseen circumstances. We apologize for the late notice, but we did not have information regarding the cancellation until today.”
There was no mention as to whether Covid-19 played any role in the decision to cancel.
But Steve Kaminski of MLive.com reported Wednesday that “Hopkins has become the fifth Grand Rapids area team this week to cancel Friday’s game because of COVID-19 issues.”

Hopkins has a 5-0 overall record and has clinched a share of the O-K Silver Conference championship with Belding. Coach Cody Francis said he hopes his team will be ready to start the post-season playoffs on Saturday, Oct. 31, which is 10 days after the Kelloggsville game was canceled.

Hopkins still entertains hopes it will be a host team in the opening round of the playoffs in Division 5.

The varsity game Friday night was supposed to be Parents’ Night at Hopkins.

Anybody who had purchased tickets for Friday’s game will be given a full refund. Just bring in tickets to the high school office and exchange them for a full refund.
Meanwhile, Martin will finish its regular season at Bangor after having to forfeit one contest because of the Coronavirus and after scrambling to put together a special contest last Saturday afternoon against Tri-Unity Christian, which resulted in a 20-6 victory. The Clippers, now 4-1 on the season overall, suited up only 11 players to play the game.

Thank you. I wish school officials would have said that when they announced.

Most likely Hopkins (4th seed) will host the opener of district 36 against Belding (5th). The winner of that game will head north to play GR Catholic Central. CC's opener will be a bye as Wyoming Lee the 8th seed has bowed out of the tournament. The only way I believe that could change is if Kelloggsville finds another opponent for Saturday instead of taking the forfeit. Then Hopkins would have a higher seed. Official pairings announce on the MHSAA website Sunday afternoon.
