Hopkins gets 1st varsity victory for coach Nate Mitchell

opatik-and-pierceNew head coach Nate Mitchell scored his first boys’ varsity basketball victory Friday night when Hopkins defeated Northpointe Christian 65-54 on the losers’ court.

Mitchell had gone 0-3 after succeeding the resigned Darrin Smith in December and the Vikings Friday ended a four-game losing skid. Northpointe, an O-K Silver Conference rival, fell to 2-4 overall, a record now shared by Hopkins.

The Vikings were led in scoring by Curtis Opatic with 24 points, sophomore Hunter Lewellyn had 13 and sophomore Nolan Smith had nine points and 10 rebounds.

Hopkins will play league opponent Belding next Tuesday evening at its home court.
