The Hopkins girls’ varsity basketball team captured the O-K Silver Conference basketball championship Friday night with a little help from its friend — Grandville Calvin Christian.
The Lady Vikings pulled out a 40-34 triumph at Belding at the same time Calvin Christian was beating NorthPointe Christian 67-58. The Vikes entered Friday’s game behind by a half game in the league standings with a 10-2 record and Northpointe was 11-2.
So Hopkins surged past the Mustangs in the derby, 11-2 to 11-3.
The Hopkins boys also emerged victorious, 62-42, to push their overall record to 14-6 and 8-5 in the O-K Silver.
Coach Jake Jewett said the Vikings led throughout all the game.
“Everyone contributed, and it was a nice win to end our conference games,” Jewett said.
Tristen Perry led all scorers with 17 points and Trent Baugh added 15.
Hopkins’ last game is next week Tuesday at home vs. Delton Kellogg.
The Lady Vikings, now 14-6 overall, will play at home in the districts Tuesday against Holland Christian at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. If they win, they will be in the district finals Friday night at 7 p.m.
