The Hopkins boys’ and girls’ track teams both are off to great starts this spring.

Viking Logo2The Lady Vikings scored more than 100 points once Wednesday in a double dual meet and 89 in the other to lift their overall season record to 5-0. The boys, meanwhile, are 4-1 overall after cruising to two more victories, also copping more than 100 points once. The victims in both cases were Wyoming Godwin Heights and West Michigan AviatioHopkins Vikings Logon Academy.

The Hopkins girls, now 2-0 in O-K Silver competition this season, recorded a 102-17 triumph Wednesday over the Wolverines. They won every event except the high jump.

Individual double winners were Rachael Weber in the 800 and 1600, Bailey Ballard in the 100-meter hurdles and the discus, Julia Forbes in the 100-meter dash and long jump and Kennedy Miedema in the 300 hurdles and pole vault.

Nicole Pavak also took first place in the open 400, Nicole Oplski the shot put and Gabby Hoffman crossed the finish line first in the 200 dash.

Megan Heft, Mindy Krcatovich Samantha Ludlam and Shannon Myers hooked up to win the 320-meter relay. Ballard, Ellen Bregg, DeBoer and Forbes captured the 800 relay. Ballard, Bregg, DeBoer and Hoffman combined to win the 400 relay. Finishing the relay sweeps for the evening in the last event, the 1600 relay were Gercke, Krcatovich, Myers and Tortoleli.

The score with West Michigan Aviation Academy was a little closer at 89-38. Essentially the same Vikings took the same victories, except the Flyers came up with an upset victory in the long jump and the same girl won the 200, as did the 1600 relay team and a girl in the open 3200, an event the Vikings decided to scratch.

The Viking boys also eclipsed the century mark in taking a 109-19 verdict from Godwin to run their record to 2-0 in league action.

They took first in every event, except that the pole vault had to be scratched by both squads.

Quincy Collings dominated the high jump and long jump, as usual. Other double winners were Zack Blank in the 110 hurdles and discus and Dakota Miller in the 1600 and 3200.

Single individual event winners were Sam Timm in the 100, Jared Coad in the open 400, Miner in the 300 hurdles, Anthony Steffens in the 200, Smit in the 800 and Wyatt Frank in the shot put.

The Viking guys swept the relays with Isaac Kukulies, Andrew Baldreich, Tim Smit and Coad in the 3200, Timm, Graczyk, Wyatt Stegeman and Steffens in the 800, Timm, Stegeman, Collings and Steffen in the 400 (in 46.51 seconds), and Kukulies, Baldreich, Coad and Hayden Graczyk in the 1600.

Hopkins defeated West Michigan Aviation Academy by a 98-28 count in the double dual.
