Both the Hopkins boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams stepped outside of O-K Silver Conference play Saturday afternoon to take on Hamilton. It was not a pleasant experience for either.
The boys fell behind 23-10 in the first quarter at home and ended up dropping a 62-48 decision.
The girls likely had an unhappy bus ride back from Hamilton after taking a 55-20 shellacking.
The girls led once, 2-0 in the first three minutes after sophomore Mady Weber scored on a layup, but the Hawkeyes then scored the next 16 points unanswered and then grabbed a 27-10 advantage going into intermission. Weber’s three-pointer at the buzzer made the score as close as it was.
Hamilton drilled three three-pointers in the first couple of minutes of the third period and took an insurmountable 39-11 lead.
The Lady Vikings again struggled on the offensive side of the ball, as they did in a loss to Comstock Park Tuesday. They were guilty of far too many turnovers, many of them again on telegraphed bad passes and even dribbling into defensive traps. And that’s not even mentioning the awful shooting and lack of rebounding.
Weber finished with five points, Ellie and Olivia Sebright both added four and Emily Tunstill came up with a three-point play in the fourth quarter.
Hopkins girls now are 3-3 on the season overall and the boys are 2-4.
