A Go Fund Me page on line has been established for the benefit of the mother of 17-year-old Hopkins High School senior Andrew Hofstee, who died suddenly last Saturday of medical complications.
The Go Fund Me post on behalf of his sister, Abigail, said, “With the average cost of proper funeral services in the United States exceeding $10,000, any contribution will help the Hofstee family during this painful time. Please consider donating not only to help the family with an unexpected financial cost, but also to help give Andrew the service he deserves.”
His passing was acknowledged Thursday on the school district’s web site: “Andrew Hofstee passed away due to medical complications. Our teachers have read an announcement to each 1st hour class to begin the support process. There were counselors and staff available for students in need. If you feel that your child or family needs further assistance, please contact us, and we will do everything we can to help you.
“Next week Thursday (Nov. 5) and Friday (Nov. 6) the entire district will hold a Hat Day to collect funds for Andrew’s family in this time of need. Staff and Students can participate by paying $1 (more is accepted, if you desire) to wear a hat.”
Andrew loved spending time playing video games and enjoyed the company of his dogs and cats. He was mechanically inclined and hoped someday to become a machinist. He enjoyed singing in the choir at Hopkins High School.
He is survived by his parents, Dawn and John Hofstee II; siblings, Abby and Christian Jones, Mackenzie Wiersma, Lindsi Wiersma, and Elina Wiersma; grandparents, John and Cindy Hofstee, Steve and Janelle Dalstra, Barbara Talsma; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Nancy Dalstra; and his great-grandparents, Roland and Wilma Talsma.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Dr. SW, with Pastor Dave Alderman officiating. The burial will take place at Blendon Township Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made in Andrew’s name to Hopkins High School Performing Arts.
