Attendance at the 91st annual Hopkins High School reunion Saturday was down a little bit, with 141 showing up for food, fellowship and reminiscing.
Hopkins Alumni Association Secretary Lee Dale “Pete Arnsman said there were several competing events Saturday, including the B-93 Birthday Bash in Martin, the Buttermilk Jamboree at Circle Pines and the Hopkins Tractor Drive at the school.
“A large number of people came without a spouse,” Arnsman explained. “A lot of old-timers are sick or their mates are sick.”
The oldest alum was Dorothy Layton Harrington, Class of 1950. It was quite a leap from the year previous when the reunion’s oldest class member was Margie Vollink Hines from the Class of 1941.
June Krug was presented with a plaque for her service as the Alumni Association’s President for 38 years. She announced her retirement from the post last year and will be succeeded by Suzanne Walker Blank, Class of 1965.
An interesting touch for the event was applied when Dave Williams played “Amazing Grace” on the mandolin and performed the Viking Fight Song to conclude the reunion. He performs that feat at home Hopkins varsity football games during halftime in honor of his deceased wife, Cynthia. He has been adding his musical talents at the request of good friend Jan Kerber Lodenstein.
The Hopkins Alumni Association offers two scholarships every year, funded by memorial contributions.
