The Hopkins boys’ varsity basketball team lifted its overall season record to 4-1 Tuesday with a 59-45 non-league victory at Kent City.

Wayland, meanwhile lost 85-70 to an Allendale squad that also is 4-1 on the season thus far. Martin fell to 0-5 on the season with a 65-20 loss at Kalamazoo Phoenix.

The Vikings shot out to a 13-8 advantage in the first period and enjoyed a 28-15 cushion at intermission. They cruised the rest of the way.

Senior Micah Estelle came on strong, finishing with 20 points and “many, many rebounds,” coach Jake Jewett said. “There’s no doubt he finished with a double-double.

Playing against Kent City’s 2-3 zone, we moved the ball well and found open shooters. Micah did a great job controlling the post, and we had a nice inside/outside game going all night long.”

Sophomore Cruz Hitzler had his best offensive game of the season and finished with 13 points. Freshmen Trent Smith and Merek Zapolnik chipped in 11 and eight points, respectively.

The Vikings will be back in action at Hastings Friday night.
