The Hopkins Family Medical Clinic is closing its doors today after serving the community for almost two years.

The clinic, a member of the Spectrum Pennock Health Services family, opened at 310 Water St. in January 2014. No specific reason was offered to patients, according to Hopkins Village President Mary Howard.

“I am sad and disappointed that the Hopkins Family Medical Clinic will be closing its doors today,” Howard said this morning on Facebook. “Patients received a letter last week from ‘the powers that be,’ announcing the closure. I have already contacted Pennock to voice my disappointment, not only with the closure but also with the process.

“There was no opportunity for input, no time to organize any effort to keep it open and no time for transition. I stopped by to see the staff today, they are heartbroken to be leaving our community. Please stop and wish them well if you have a chance and please contact the hospital management to voice your opinion.”

Hopkins Family Medicine was open for two days a week with nurse practitioner Marlene Berens DNP, who wrote limited prescriptions for standard medications. The clinic provided comprehensive adult and pediatric care for patients of all ages through a variety of primary care, preventive health, diagnostic, and clinical services.

In case of a medical challenge, the clinic worked with a team of Spectrum Health Pennock Specialists to provide patients with a more comprehensive range of services.

Pennock Hospital, based in Hastings, recently was taken over by Spectrum Health Services, based in Grand Rapids.

Mimi Gabriel, retired director of the Allegan County United Way, who lives in the village, said the clinic was in the building that house the former medical practice of Dr. Tadd Heft, across the street from Dallas Kerber’s CD Quik Mart on Main Street.
