Hopkins Schools Superintendent Gary Wood reported Wednesday that a middle school student has presented symptoms of chicken pox.

“The diagnosis has not been confirmed, but a culture has been sent out for further testing,” Wood said in a posting on the school’s Facebook page. “We will have a definitive answer on what the illness is within 48 hours.”

The superintendent said the district has taken precautions by disinfecting classrooms, buses and other areas commonly used by students.

“Regardless of the results of the testing, we will communicate further on this situation once we have more information,” Wood wrote.

Anyone with more questions may call the Allegan County Health Department or their family physician.

Though a common childhood disease in the past, chicken pox can have serious consequences for people who have compromised immune systems and adults who contract the disease can die from it. It is highly contagious.
