Hopkins Public Schools has announced it has received its third financial award this year, the most recent $4,229.88 from the Michigan Department of Education for the Acceptable Assessment Tools for Early Literacy Educators grant.
The MDE is awarding districts funds to supplement and enhance the Assessment Program for Early Literacy (specifically Y5’s-grade 3). Tools the Hopkins Public School district uses, such as DIBELSNext materials and Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment Systems kits are among the many things that this grant money will reimburse.
These tools, coupled with a variety of other measures, such as state summative assessments and teacher observation, help make very informative educational decisions about a child’s literacy acquisition.
Hopkins Public Schools about a month ago received a $24,570 Michigan Department of Education grant through the Additional Instructional Time and Interventions program. This grant is designed to provide schools with funds to offer K-3 students additional instructional time or literacy interventions, particularly those who have been identified as needing extra support in order to be reading at grade level by the end of third grade.
These funds are being used to supplement Leveled Literacy Intervention kits with teacher editions as well as supplementing the technology the Gun Lake Tribe gifted the district earlier this year. The funds from the Gun Lake Tribe allowed the district to purchase ten iPads for each Y5’s through second grade classrooms and three Chromebook carts that can be taken into elementary classrooms for curricular activities.
