The Hopkins Township Board unanimously adopted a resolution Monday night to purchase a one-acre parcel east on 22nd Street to accommodate expansion of Lakeview Cemetery.

The township has agreed to a $7,000 purchase price from the seller and landowner, Shrock.

“We’ve been talking about this for a long time,” said Supervisor Mark Evans. “And now we’re finally going to get something done about it.”

Evans indicated the township also is seeking to expand Maplewood Cemetery in similar fashion.

In other business Monday evening, the Township Board:

• Heard from County Commissioner Gale Dugan that action on the Gun Lake Tribe’s request to take a non-gaming Hopkins Township parcel into trust has been tabled. Because Commissioner Rick Cain has just started as replacement for the retiring Don Black, colleagues want him to get up to speed on the issue.

Dugan said he expects issues regarding the Gun Lake Casino revenue distribution will be taken up next month. Evans said it’s his understanding that Revenue Sharing Board member Linden Anderson has retired and asked who his successor is. He did not receive an answer.

• Learned the Township Planning Commission continues to deal with a proposed opt-out response for requests to grow, distribute and sell marijuana within its borders.

Trustee Chuck Wamhoff said at this point opting out is better because, “Once you’re in, it’s pretty hard to go the other way.”
