Hopkins, Wayland flex track muscle in relays

The Hopkins girls’ track team after winning the Watervliet meet.

The Wayland and Hopkins track teams have been flexing success muscles thus far this season and some of it showed up Friday night at the Hastings Saxon Co-Ed Relays.

Hopkins already has emerged from championship performances for both boys and girls in the Watervliet Invitational. And Wayland demonstrated some startling performances Friday afternoon and evening.

Hopkins freshman Luke Stein continued to astonish almost everyone by clearing 13 feet in the pole vault, and a 12-foot height was achieved by Wayland junior Evie Mathis in her first outdoor vault of the 2025 season. She also was first in the long jump at 14-10.2.5.

Wayland was particularly dominant in the boys’ throws, the shot put and discus. Adam Huff won the shot and the discus with ease, but he wasn’t that far ahead of teammate Ashton Kuhlman, 49-11.75 to 48-8. Viking Joshua Maules was fourth and Wildcat Ashton Kasprowicz fifth.

Huff and Kasprowicz went 1-2 in the discus.

Carter Marquard, Carter Williamson and Gavin Howard of Wayland went 1-2 -3 in the high jump at 6-2 and 6-0.

Parker Warners of Hopkins edged Wayland’s Carter Marquard for top honors in the long jump.

Keilah Bonga of Hopkins won the discus and was second in the shot.

Addyson Moyle and Gwen Howard both cleared 4-9 in the high jump to claim second and third places.

In the co-ed portion of the meet:

Wildcats Megan Brogger, Henry Maass. Quinn Reeder and Chance Lenhart won the 400-meter relay.

Hopkins’ Navaya Ingle, Kambria Moored, Jacob Helder and Brayden Harnish took the mixed 800-meter relay.

Moored, Graycin Ingle, Sophia Balker and Klinge won won the 440 shuttle hurdles relay.

Brock Wheeler, Maurgan Howard, Megan Brogger and Ryleigh Haveman took the 1600-meter relay in 3:53.97.

Xander Stepek, Breslin Vandenbos, Gre Hoodgewind and Mikayla Lehnart hooked up for am first place in the 3200-meter relay.

Colten Ludy, Hoodgewind. Chase Wallace and Quinn Reeder took first for Wayland in the 600-meter relay.

Hopkins’ Grady Johnston, Andrea Brower, Matthew Guzmanand Tuesday Stevens won the 2400-meter relay for Hopkins.

Hoogewind, Maurgan Howard, Lenhart and Dylan Pallett captured first place in the 4,000-meter relay.

The meet included four area teams, Hastings, Delton, Wayland Hopkins.
