The Hopkins and Wayland boys’ and girls’ basketball teams have shut down the rest of the regular seasons in hopes of staying healthy enough to compete in the post-season basketball tournaments.

All four teams have had their regular season games canceled this week, but tournament play starts Monday, March 22, and continues through Saturday, March 27. Wayland is host for the district tourney for girls Monday, Wednesday and Friday and Hopkins will be the home gym for the boys’ competition Tuesday Thursday and Saturday.

All of the Wildcat and Viking teams will participate, Covid willing.

The Coronavirus shut down high school basketball a year ago, terminating a potentially terrific season for the Martin girls’ squad, which was scheduled to play in the regional finals with a 22-1 overall record. Resurrecting basketball this season has been difficult because it is a contact sport and is played indoors.

Hopkins boys finished their regular season with a 7-7 overall record, Wayland was 2-10. Wayland girls finished at 8-2 and Hopkins was 6-9.
