Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians (Gun Lake Tribe) and U.S. Department of Agriculture will present a program on “The Importance of Pollinators” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 24, at the Luella Collins Community Center, 419 126th St. Shelbyville.
This event is open to the public at large and free to attend. There will be a dinner served, free of charge, after the presentation. Speakers from the Gun Lake Tribe and U.S. Department of Agriculture will present information to the audience.
“The decrease in pollinators in the U.S. over the last 20 years is a very serious concern,” a Tribe spokesperson said. “The May 24 presentation will inform the audience about the important roles bees and other pollinators play in our ecosystem and what we can do to support and protect pollinators.
Anneke Vermeulen, a soil conservationist with U.S. Department of Agriculture, will be part of the presentation. She works with local farmers on conservation plans to manage resources responsibly for both humans and wildlife. Pollinators are a strong passion of hers and she is looking forward to the opportunity to share her knowledge with the Gun Lake Tribe and all those who attend the event.
