Freshman Xander Stepek

Wayland High School’s cross country debut Monday was a mixed bag on the home course.

Senior Isaac Dyer came up with an impressive individual medalist five-kilometer performance in 17:57.72, more than 20 seconds than his nearest competitor.

Junior Dylan Pallett also had a decent outing, taking this in the race with a time of 18:20.48. Freshman Xander Stepek had a fabulous high school debut by taking sixth in 19:01.05.

However, visiting Grand Rapids Track Club Peregrines overcame the Wildcat harriers with superior depth and won the dual meet portion 26-33, by scoring second, fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth places.

Also checking in Wayland were sophomore Ethan Manning in 21:28.14 and freshman Mason Fein in 21:58.12, good for 15th and 17th places.

The biggest disappointment is something that has plagued coach Jennifer Antel since the start of the campaign — not enough runners. Only four Lady Wildcats competed, so they did not register a team score.

Senior Elliot Antel captured 11th place in 24:46.08. Other Wayland runners completing the course were sophomore Megan Stack, junior Sarah Osborn and senior Alyssa Lawrence.

Wayland’s next adventure will be Friday evening at South Christian’s Under the Lights Invitational.
